The Wodny Market – a promenade with a fountain

The market owes its name to the nearby Łabuńka River, which used to get very close to the place. Located near the defensive walls of Zamość fortress, the market protected the town against flooding.  Although it was called a market, it never performed the function typical of such places; instead, eminent Zamość residents erected their tenement houses here. Chancellor Jan Zamoyski’s personal secretary used to live here as well as other town officials and their families. Originally, as benefits an ideal town, the market was a square and was surrounded with frontages of arcaded houses. However, because of historical events, the market lost its original shape. Between the two wars a square with benches and trees was made on the market. It somehow managed to survive beside the charming and cherished Rynek Wielki. In autumn 2010 its old splendour was restored.  The new surface, period benches, modern lampposts, flowerbeds and a stone ball-shaped sculpture, which is a reference to Zamość as an ideal town, are results of  restoration of the Wodny Market.  There is one more thing that justifies its original name - a colourful fountain, which is a major attraction for residents and tourists. The place becomes particularly crowded in the evenings, when the fountain looks its best. In spring and summer the show of different colours is accompanied by nice music which comes from the nearby Musical School,  located in the former convent and church of Saint Clare sisters.
