Information

Apparently, it is the cloudiest town in the Roztocze district with mean cloudiness of 66-68 percent. However, this information should be taken with a pinch of salt because Great Crown Chancellor Jan Zamoyski chose the most beautiful sites for the towns he founded. Soon after he had founded Zamość he founded Tomaszów. The town was designed by Bernardo Morando, the same Italian architect who had designed Zamość. Tomaszów was quite prosperous as a trade centre located on a trade route leading from Kraków to Kiev. At the end of the 19th century there was a pottery and porcelain factory here as well as a spirits plant, which made cherry and raspberry brandy and meads. The local Jews also had factories in which soap, hats, linen and combs were manufactured.

In September 1939 two large battles with Nazi troops were fought near Tomaszów.  As a result of military activities, historical buildings in the town were all destroyed. Only two interesting buildings have been preserved and renovated: the most precious building is a 17th century larch church of the Annunciation.  An Orthodox church of St. Nicholas is also worth visiting.

Tomaszów Lubelski is said to be a centre for winter sports. From here it is very near to L’viv - a gem of architecture and culture inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
